Why it matters

A Harvard-trained psychiatrist who spent seven years as a monk — he explains attention, motivation and my relationship with technology clinically, which is exactly what I need.

Dr. K nearly failed out of college on video game addiction, went to India, and spent seven years studying to become a monk before coming back to do an MD and MPH at Tufts and a psychiatry residency at Mass General/McLean. Both halves are in the channel: evidence-based contemplative practice and hard clinical psychiatry, pointed at the thing the internet is doing to attention.

What I get from it is not inspiration. It is a working model — how motivation actually behaves, what avoidance is doing underneath, why willpower fails and what to do instead. He treats the relationship with technology as a clinical problem rather than a moral one, which is the only framing I’ve found that makes it tractable.
