Why it matters

The most rigorous thinking anywhere on peer production as an actual economy — commons, governance, and how they get coordinated at planetary scale.

Belgian political theorist, founder of the P2P Foundation. He has been arguing since the mid-2000s that peer production is not a hobby of the open-source world but an emerging mode of production with its own logic — and that the interesting question is not whether it works but how it gets governed.

The thread I keep pulling is the commons as a third thing next to market and state. Once you stop seeing those two as the only options, most problems get a third answer. He has taken that into practice too: commons transition plans for Ecuador and for Ghent, and more recently accounting systems for blockchain-based coordination.
