Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life
It separates observation from evaluation, feeling from accusation, need from strategy — and most conflict turns out to live in the confusion between them.
Rosenberg’s four components — observation, feeling, need, request — are simple enough to look like a formula, which is what most people stop at. The thing that makes it work is the split underneath: the same four components are used to express honestly and to receive empathically, listening for what the other person is observing, feeling, needing, and requesting even when their words arrive as blame.
The load-bearing move is the third one. Needs are universal — safety, rest, connection, autonomy, meaning — and nobody has a need for a specific person to do a specific thing. Nearly every fight I’ve been in was a strategy dressed up as a need.
