Why it matters

The brain as eight circuits you can reprogram — a user's manual for your own consciousness, written as a joke that keeps turning out to be serious.

Wilson’s guidebook, grown out of a 1979 doctoral thesis. It lays out Timothy Leary’s eight-circuit model of consciousness — four “antique” circuits everyone has, four later ones that he argues exist only in minorities so far — and pairs each with exercises. Korzybski’s general semantics and Crowley’s Thelema run underneath.

The exercises are the point. You don’t read this book so much as run it on yourself: the map is not the territory, and Wilson wants you to notice the difference in your own head rather than agree with him about it.

We are all giants, raised by pygmies, who have learned to walk with a perpetual mental crouch.
