The Society of the Spectacle

Why it matters

The spectacle is not the media. It is a social relation mediated by images — one we keep choosing over the life it replaced.

Debord’s 1967 book-length thesis, written in numbered theses like a manifesto. The spectacle is not the mass media. It is a social relation mediated by images — the point at which capital has accumulated so far that it becomes an image.

It came thirteen years before Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation, and Baudrillard built on it. Where Debord still has a real world being veiled by appearances, Baudrillard drops the world behind the veil altogether. Reading them in order is watching that shift happen.
